Chubby Twist -Big and Kinky

As many of you already know, I cut my Sister Locks off, back in September of 2008.  The primary impetus for that decision was my fascination with the Chubby Twist style.  One of our dear clients, Dorothy Joseph (bottom of the Client’s page) came in to get the Chubby Twist for more than a year.  And each time she came in to have her Chubby Twist done, I would fantasize about what it would be like to have this big, kinky style.

I guess part of the fascination even for me is the fact that this style is a weave.  Normally, when you think of a weave, you think of straight hair being blended into a straight hair weave.  But this style is, kinky textured hair that is blended into your own naturally,  kinky hair.   What a novel concept!

The results are such that everywhere I go, people think I this is all my own hair.  Even those who just saw me last week with a much shorter style, think this is my hair.  Love that! A well known natural hair expert said to me, “Wow your hair has grown a lot since the last time I saw you”.  That was about a month ago, so of course I thought she was joking.  Then I realized that she was serious and I had to inform her that this is a weave.  She was duly surprised and impressed.

Now I finally have the big, nappy hair and I love it!  This care-free styles, looks natural, feels natural  and is a style that suits my personal sensibilities about hair.  What do you think?  Would you be up for sporting a big, nappy style like Chubby Twist?  Let me know your thoughts.

    • Dear Jacqueline,
You would come to Khamit Kinks to get the Chubby Twist. We may be able to easily blend your SL into this style. We would need to see your hair in person to determine whether or not that could work.

Of course I would! What brand of hair did you use? I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything so natural-looking sold in stores near me.

As I told you on Tuesday, I love the look. I am thinking about getting it after I finish rocking the Tomboy. I exercise and sweat a lot, will it hold up well for 3 months?

    • Hi Tracy,
This is a style that definitely holds up to sweating and exercising. You know I’m not going to allow any hairstyle to keep me from working out!

In the meantime, enjoy your Tom Boy!

So, Anu….with the length of my hair, is this a style that I can have? I know I can do it with my own hair but I suspect that it wouldn’t last very long. Whadya think?

  7. Hi I love the chubby twist look, I would love to do this as a protective style while transitioning. Currently I just re-did the kinky twists and i am not a fan of the straight weaves so I am in love with this style already. How long does my hair have to be, I will have about 2 inches when I am ready. Do we need to a consultation before I can get this style?. My ultimate goal is to do the s/l, Im growing it out right now and I have about an inch of growth. Many questions hope you can help , thank you !

    • Dear Haliadbb,
An in-person consultation is always nets the best results and so it’s highly recommended. The Chubby Twist requires that you have at least four inches of your own hair (especially around the hairline) in order to have your hair blend into the Chubby Twist weave. This is what makes this style look so natural. No one would imagine that kinky hair is being blended into a weave, so everyone thinks it’s your own hair. But you need that length to pull off that look.

    • Dear Roz,
The hair does come a number of colors but it will probably best for you to come in so we can see the exact color you’re referring to and see how close of a match we can get. If you don’t live in the area you can mail us a sample of the hair color you’re referring to.

Anu, I absolutely love the chubby twists on you!

Aside from how fabulous this style looks, I especially love it because it’s a great protective style that allows my hair to rest and flourish. People never believed me when I told them it was a weave!

    • Dorothy it is because of how you sported the Chubby Twist that I was inspired to cut off my Sister Locks and get the Dorothy look. So Thank you for the inspiration and the compliment.

Can you use the same hair that is used for the regular kinky twist to create this style, instead of getting a weave??

    • Dear Sherry,
You can try it, but it won’t be the same. Not to say that it won’t be just as beautiful and nice, but once you have changed the hair texture and the technique then you don’t have the same hairstyle at all. You have something totally different. But go for it and let me know how it works out.

    Dear Anu,
We live in a suburb of Chicago, are there any Salons in or around Chicago that the chubby twist weave?

    • Hi Helen,
The Chubby Twist style is a Khamit Kinks original and we know of no one else offering this style. However, there is a natural hair salon in Chicago name Amazon. You might check them out.

Dear Anu, I braid and twist my own hair and I love your baby curl twists. I would like to purchase the hair. How many ounces of hair is needed for a full head?

    • Dear Kafayat,
Normally four to five bundles are sufficient. You just have to make certain that you don’t use too much of the hair. A little of it goes a long way. There have been cases where too much is used initially and then it runs out before the head is completed.

BTW, I love the name of your delicious email address.

      Take care!

I love this style. I just got it down myself last week. At first I didn’t like it because I wanted it to look exactly like the picture. Now I am starting to love it….however I can not get it to twist so define like yours. I used the products that I was told but to no avail. Do you have any suggestions?

    • Dear Keisha,
I’m not sure how you’re achieving this style. Is it with your own hair or extensions? Are you using a hooded hair dryer to set the style?

It was done last week with extensions. I came into your shop this past Friday. Every time I twist the hair it comes out flat. I use Dudley’s PCA and Lottabody mixed with water as instructed.

Anu, I am sweating this hairstyle so bad I am literally salvating as we speak. I am planning to come into the salon in a few weeks and am trying to decide what I want to get done. I am also loving the Tom Boy (braid) and Tomboy (weave) styles. Here is the deal I am an island girl currently living in the Virgin Islands which means beach all the time and on top of that I work out (yoga, pilates, tennis) at least five days a week. So the question is how realistic is the Chubby Twist Out for my lifestyle. I was also wondering what the difference was between the Chubby Twist Out and Chubby Twist II. Thanks

    • Dear Nichole,
How jealous do you want me to be, living on an island, lots of time at the beach doing yoga, pilates, tennis, ahhh, the good life! You are blessed. You mentioned the beach, so I’m assuming here that you’re in the water. Well, to tell you the truth, most natural styles do not hold up well to constant contact with water.

The hair used for the Tom Boy is the Baby Curl hair which is soft and would slide out of your hair if you went swimming with that in. That is not a style I would recommend for someone who is swimming on a regular basis. You would be wasting your money.

The Chubby Twist Out is essentially a ‘set’; you know like a roller set. So as soon as you wet it, it’s over.

The Chubby Twist II is a weave using a kinky textured hair and that one would hold up best out of all the options that you’ve chosen.

It seems that you’re looking for styles that are loose or have a loose look. Most of them cannot get wet. When clients have really active lifestyles like yours, the best option are styles with synthetic hair as synthetic hair is not altered by water.

I hope this has been helpful. We look forward to seeing you soon.

can you achieve a chubby twist out w/ just your natural hair?

    • The Chubby Twist style is created using an abundant amount of kinky extensions. You would have to have a lot of hair to approximate that style. But it’s certainly worth a try.

I live in Atl and I was wondering do you know of any salons in the area that can achieve this hairstyle.

    • Dear Joy,
This is a signature Khamit Kinks hairstyle and I don’t know of anyone else who does it. I will share with you that it is a kinky weave that is then set in large double strand twists.
