What hair is required to do the Billy Holiday – Corkscrew style?
The Corkscrew has is used to achieve the Billie Holiday style.
My girlfriend wants to be a certified associate to circulate cards and advertise her business for sister locks. Do you have a listing nearest the following districts: 1) Washington, DC or 2)Maryland district for classes?
Within 5 miles of Washington DC where can you take classes for certification to do sister locks?
I love your work, but live in Phoenix. Do you know or recommend anyone in the Phoenix or L.A. area?
Hi Dorothy,
Unfortunately, we don’t know anyone in those areas. How
ever Essence Magazine offers an on line lising of national
salons. You might want to check that out.
Hi Anu!
I’m trying to grow my hair back out (it had grown out during the pregnancy of my twins, but I chopped it off after their birth last year). What braiding style, if any, do you think would be best for me to let it grow (by leaving it alone)? It’s currently cut in the Rhianna style/with the longer bangs. But it’s long enough in back to catch for micros. Also, what are some good styling products to use for moisture& non-breakage? I currently use Pink Oil Touch-Up as a perm and Motions Shampoo/Conditioner/Scalp treatment, but that regime isn’t working well. Any advice you can provide will be helpful, thanks!
t
Hi Tonya,
In terms of style to grow your hair out, any braid style would work. It just really depends on what kind of look you prefer. I am not familiar with what the Rhianna style is? If your hair is really short, synthetic braids will hold better, they won’t slip the way human hair does.
In terms of of moisturizing, I recommend Jane Carter products or Miss Jessies.
Hello Anu,
I am from Northern, California and I absolutely love the JIll Scott hair style that you offer in your salon. Unfortunately I dont get to do much traveling but I wanted you order the hair through your salon. I am not sure which one to order.
Thank you so much,
Mesha
Blessings my Sista Anu,
I’m interested in getting the Coil Technique and, I wanted to know what the starting price is for this style? Also, are there any particular days during the week when it’s discounted?
Thanx
Blessings Paghtrischia,
When you say the coil technique, are you referring to the single strand twist also known as Starter Locs? Or are you referring to the original coils which are done of rubber coated wire? We recently did that style again for the first time in years and will post it to the site soon. Let me know which you are referring to.
I was referring to the rubber coated wire style. I also wanted to know could I remove these wires myself once the eight weeks are up? The reason that I’m asking that is because, I would be coming from Pittsburgh to get this style created by your salon.
P.S. Thanx for the prompt reply
Hi,
First let me say I love your site and your styles. I live in North Carolina and it is almost impossible to find a good natural stylist. I need help with up keep. My hair is semi kinky, but rather soft and I have a hard time keepeing it mostiurized and keeping it from breaking. I have tried Ms Jessies products, but was not happy with them could you suggest something else for day to day care.
Thanks
Could you recommend products for day to day care othere than Ms Jessies. My hair tends to be dry and brittle with lots of shedding.
Hi Latasha,
I’m not certain which of the Miss Jessie’s products you’ve been using. Their Butter Creams are for moisturizing whereas their Pudding is a holding/firming product.
In the meantime, I would suggest http://www.Janecartersolutions.com products. Another great line I like is Sebastian’s products.
I had one of each, because I wanted to relax my kink a little so I purchased the product that they said would do that and I also purchased a butter cream. I didn’t have much luck with either. My biggest problem is getting my hair healthy I live in the south and in my particular area there are not a lot of qualified natural stylist so I have learned to style it myself, but I have not mastered caring for my hair. Is there a regimine you could also suggest.
Hi Anu
my hair is slightly longer than shoulder length, i get it cut or trimmed evry 6-7 weeks so i dont get split ends but it doesnt grow after it reaches that length..and when i straighten it i get frizzy hair after a while..it dont look so straight then! what should i do?
thanx!! xx
Dear Sabiha,
Everyone’s hair grows at a different rate and length depending on their on DNA. I am not sure how you’re wearing your hair? Of course as I’m sure you’ve noticed, those who wear Loc can have their hair grow to any length they want. But for most of us, wearing our hair out and grooming it on a regular basis will stunt the growth to a great degree.
Hi Anu,
I am interested in the Chaka Khan style. I do not live in New York. Where can I purchase the hair and how much do I need for a full head? Also, do you know any salons in Atlanta, Georgia that can create this style?
Dear Kym,
Please call our salon for information on the Chaka Khan hair. We can be reached at 718.422.2600. You might try to have this style achieved at Braids, Weaves and Things salon in Atlanta.
I have tried the hair for the Chaka Khan. It gets tangled and it looses the curl. What hair product do you recommend to stop the frizzing?
Hi,
I am new to braiding and I currently have a perm in my hair. I like my permed hair however since I am a full-time graduate student with little time on my hands to take care of my hair as before in the past, I just want a break from the perm and allow my hair to have a break from all the chemicals. Do you think its a good idea to get braids for a certain period of time and later on go back to perming. If so, what braiding style promotes hair growth?
Thanks
Kat
Dear Kat,
There is no problem with going back and forth between braids and a perm. In terms of braiding styles that promote hair growth any braid style that’s put in properly and taken out in sufficient amount of time (no longer than 12 weeks), will help promote hair growth. You should avoid braids that are put in too tight or with too much bulk (extensions). Another concern is leaving the braids in too long, especially with hair that is relaxed. Hair that is braided on a regular basis tends to cling making it easy to loc the hair. With relaxed hair this clinging can turn into matting which can be quite difficult to comb out. Therefore, I highly recommend deep conditioning in between braiding appointments.
My hair is natural and I usually have two strand twist with human hair (Baby Curl Twist) or my own two strand hair twist. I joined the gym and swim a few times a week. I was thinking of getting braid extensions with synthetic hair, but am not sure if that is the way I should go. Do you agree or do you have any other suggestions. Is one style better than others?
Dear Gen,
The Baby Curl Twist definitely would not hold up to be exposed to water that often. You’re on the right track. Two Strand Twist with your own hair would work but single braids with synthetic extensions would hold up the best.
Hi Anu
I have natural hair that is very fine in texture. Approximately 5 months ago I had twists put in with human hair (or so the package said). I left the twists in for 8 weeks and I have been wearing my hair in natural (non-braided or blow dried) styles since then. I noticed recently that my hair seems to have a lot of split ends as well as splitting up the shaft of the hair (to 2 inches). I’m wondering if the hair that was used could have caused this problem given that I have such fine hair.
Thanks
Dear Bisola,
I have never heard of extension hair causing split ends. Let me ask you a few questions. Do you trim your hair on a regular basis? When was the last time you had a trim? Do your ends still have relaxer in them or is all of your hair natural now? Once I hear back from you regarding these questions, I’ll be able to better assist you.
All of my hair is natural (8-10 inches when blow dried). Honestly, I have not obtained regular trims. Now I’m concerned that I come in for a trim, 2-2 1/2 inches will need to be removed. I prefer to wear my hair pulled back in a bun and I won’t be able to if that much hair is removed. I’m also really trying to figure out what caused the initial breakage (besides lack of trimming) so that I don’t repeat it as my hair grows out. BTW – I do think it’s weird that I have notice splitting within the hair shaft with no split at the end.
Dear Bisola,
I highly recommend that you see a professional Stylist. Splitting in the middle of the hair and not at the ends sounds a little strange. And while you’re at it, I think you should definitely book an appointment for a deep conditioning treatment.
I am looking to have a full head of loc extensions installed at your salon, I understand that I would need to have a consultation done beforehand, but my only problem is that I am out of state. Although, is would not be a problem to travel back and forth for a monthly maintenance. Thanks
Dear Jasmin,
I apologize for taking so long to get back to you. I used to get notices whenever someone posted a question and I just noticed that they are no longer sending me these notices. I had no idea so many had questions to be answered.
We can definitely do a in-depth consultation over the phone first, since you live out of town. Just fill out our on line consultation first. Once we have that, we will get back to you and we can go from there.
I currently maintain my locks at home because I am unable to find a good loctician, any suggestions on how I can get the “salon” look? And what are some good products for colored locks?
Dear Kiana,
Any product that isn’t harsh, that doesn’t have a lot of alcohol should work to maintain your color. We recommend Jane Carter and Miss Jessie’s Products.
just started my sisterlocks about a months and couple days ago but i have a probloem with them. If i shampoo my hair ,”since i have a dry scalp problem” they swells and open. i used the method which i keep them in band when i shampoo. i have 3 1/2 inches in lenght and a soft texture….my sisterlock technician used the reverse four technique in my hair……. should my hair be opening and can i used something to help it hold like the aloe vera plant? please help me.
Dear Valcia,
You mentioned that you used the rubber bands, I hope this means you are braiding your SL before putting the rubber bands on? The Sister Locks should be tightly braided so that they don’t swell when you shampoo them. Also, you might consider going back to your Sister Lock Tech, so that she can do the shampoo for you. She needs to see how your hair is progressing. Your hair should not be swelling up.
I want to buy some hair, do you have a color chart?
Dear Patrice,
We do not offer a color chart on line because all the colors other than black, vary not only from one manufacturer to another, but particularly with human hair, it changes from one batch to another. The colors with synthetic hair tends to be more stable and you can use that as a general guide.
Hi,
I need to know what kind of human hair can be used in two strand twists. I am allergic to synthetic fibers.
Thanks, Tiff
Dear Tiff,
So many different textures can be used to create the two strand twist. It’s just a matter of what texture you prefer. Check out our website and the textures used for the different twist styles. Each picture has a pop up page that gives the name of the hair used. http://www.khamitkinks.com
Hi Anu!
I love the baby curl hair but I think my hair is too short for that style so I’m considering the Gypsy twists. How many packs/oz would you recommend. I wish I lived closer to your shop!
If your hair is too short, you will loose a lot of your Baby Curl twist. So the best move is to grow your hair out a bit first. Two packs of the Gypsy Twist should be enough.
Hi Anu,
I want to know if you should wait between braiding styles, to give you hair a break, or is it okay to get them redone in a day or two. I need to color my gray but I want to re-braid my hair the next day.
Thanks Syd
Hi Sydni,
It all depends on the health and strength of your hair. It’s always good to have a break, but it’s not necessary if your hair is strong and you have a Stylist who knows what she’s doing. If you’re having any thinning around the hairline or breakage, I would say wait a few days to a week or so. But if all is well, you can certainly dive right in again.
Hi Anu,
I live in Texas and it is not feasible for me to visit your salon (which I would love to) so I recently ordered some Baby Curl hair from you which I will have installed in the near future. What method do you suggest for washing and maintaining my hair while I have the twist extensions in? My hair is all natural.
Thanks
Dear Jackie,
The Baby Curl hair is very soft and so I would say shampoo your hair gingerly. And in between shampoos you should use the dry shampoo method of cleaning the scalp. For more details on that method, check our consultation page at KhamitKinks.com
Anu!
Pleasure viewing and reading all this site has to offer! Well, I want sexy natural hair! I went natural in Aug of 2007 but my hair is still not what I wished for. I put a very mild texturizer in and I am still unhappy. With my recent move to NY and seeing all the beautiful naturalness I want locs but will I still be able to do that with the texturizer in or should I cut it off once again?
Oh the hair stories… Remy since you are in the area, I recommend that you go on line, fill out our consultation form and then come in to the salon. I need to see just how “texturized” your hair is to determine whether or not you should cut it all off and start from scratch.
how can i purchase the nappy snappy hair
Call the salon for details on this Sandra. Ask for Taeisha 718-422-2600.
i have natural hair and wanted to know how can i obtain the tomboy look or what can i use to allow my hair to stand up to imitate the style
Dear Melody,
As I have told many clients, unless you have an incredible amount of hair, it’s difficult for your own hair to achieve the same look as hair with extensions. The main reason for that is that the volume is difficult to imitate with your own hair. There are tricks that can be used. For instance, I am now wearing what we termed many years ago as A Nu Fro. I had my hair curled with the Straw Set, but because my hair is fine, I didn’t like the look of it. So with a Afro Pick, I lifted the roots to make my hair look fuller. Try something like that to achieve your Tom Boy look and let me know how it goes.

Hi Anu,
I am very interested in getting the baby curl twists. I’d like to order the hair online. Is the hair reusable? And will the style be altered with shampooing? Also, I live in DC and wanted to know if your salon recommended any places in DC to have this done.
Thanks for your feedback,
Natalie
Hi Natalie,
The Baby Curl hair is reusable if you take care of it while you have it in and you are mindful and careful about how you take it out. Also, it can’t really be cut too much at all if you plan to reuse it. You should just have the ends lightly trimmed. The only salon I know of in DC is Cornrows and Company and I don’t know what they offer in terms of style options.
Anu,
I have RE embraced my naturalness. I have been natural for exactly one year now. Every month I cut off a 1/2 inch to 1 inch of hair after cleansing and my hair is soft VERY manageable and I really enjoy being free from the bondage of that ”creamy crack”!
I would like to explore more natural styles..my question is:
what is the difference between
1.Gypsy Twists
2.Baby Curl Twists and finally
3.the Tom Boy
I LOVE the look of the Tom Boy, but I prefer a FULLER slightly LONGER look.
Thank you very much for your time
Blessings,
Ada
Hi Ada,
The difference between Gypsy Twist and Baby Curl Twist is the texture of the extension hair. Baby Curl is “real” human hair. The Gypsy Curl is Korean “human” hair, purchased in a package. The Tom Boy is the Baby Curl done short.
Hi Anu,
I have natural hair that I’ve been wearing flat ironed, however, I’m trying to stay away from the heat and hit the gym consistantly! I need something that’s low maintenance as well as professional for the office. I love the baby curl twist. However, I’m concerned that if I purchase the hair, I will not be able to find anyone here in Missouri that can give me that look. What do you recommend? How does the style hold up with working out. Does the hair matt or tangle? What about the gypsy hair? I love the smaller looking twist.
Desperately need help!
Tanya
Dear Tanya,
The Baby Curl is a very popular style and the hair is top quality. It’s so good, that if taken care of properly, it can be used twice. In terms of having someone in Missouri give you our hairstyle, that is a chance you’d have to determine if whether you are willing to take. The hair as you know is not cheap and you wouldn’t want to put it in the hands of someone who is not skilled with using this hair. You can work out in this style, you just have to take care to cleanse your scalp via a dry shampoo on a regular basis.
The Gypsy hair is not as expensive and it might be good to start there. Or you could consider keeping your eye out for cheap tickets to NY and treat yourself to the Khamit Kinks experience. The holidays are coming and you just might decide to treat yourself. Just another option. Some times we have to consider being “unreasonable” about what we desire for ourselves and our lives… Just a thought. Feel free to give us a call if need be 718-422-2600.

Dear Anu,
I just want to start off by saying thank you for this blog; I really enjoy reading your posts.
I am a performer and I am getting ready to start a contract where I’ll be performing on a cruise ship for 8 months straight, with no possibility of coming home. My time in port will be limited, and we will be in Europe for a significant portion of time, so access to black hair care will probably not be possible.
Right now I wear a weave and I am thinking about growing my hair out and transitioning to natural hair. Are there any styles or methods of transitioning you can recommend? For the shows I am in I will most probably be wigged, so braids are not really an option for me as the wig won’t sit right on top of them. Thank you so much!!! Your suggestions are appreciated!
Dear Jen,
It sounds like you’re pretty busy and rather sequestered from being able to have a professional help you through your transition to natural hair. You didn’t mention which countries you’ll be in while in Europe? I do know that in England and France they do have sisters from Nigeria and Senegal respectively that braid hair. I would recommend a small cornrow style that a wig could easily fit over; perhaps with your own hair or very little extension hair added. I would also recommend having some good moisturizing products like a rich conditioner and hair oil for the scalp and hair. You should leave the braids in no longer than three months. Then they would need to be done over again, otherwise your hair could begin to lock. I don’t know if you personally have any braiding skills to keep the cornrows up yourself; but considering you’ll be wearing a wig, cornrows would be best. Cornrows are not so popular these days, but they are great because unlike single braids, they give your hair and scalp a rest; and your hair grows thick in lush in cornrows. This is primarily true with cornrows that are done properly, that are not put in too tight and that are without a lot of extension hair added at the beginning of the braid.
I hope this has been helpful. Feel free to reach out to me again if you have any further questions.
Thanks so much for the response Anu!! I hadn’t even thought of cornrows! And I will be in and out of England (Dover) so I should hopefully have an opportunity to get my hair braided..thanks again!!!
Dear Anu,
I have approximately 5-6 inches of natural very kinky hair. I plan to get micro two-strand twist with 100 percent natural kinky hair (tightly coiled curl) extensions. I’ve been reading various blogs about the twists matting with the 100 percent human hair — including the baby curl hair. Taking down the extension for some women has been a nightmare. I’m getting a little worried after reading this. Are they having this problem because the hair was not properly maintained?
Thanks for your advice.
Karen
Dear Karen,
If the style is taken out by the 12th week t here should be no problem. If the extension hair does cling to your own hair, saturate it with a balsam conditioner to soften it up for about an hour. Then the removal process should be much easier.
Hi Anu,
All suggestions are welcomed. Thanks so much- Celeste
Being a Jersey girl, when I first realized I need guidance on how to best care for my natural hair, I looked up your website. Thankfully, I found your blog. After wearing a weave for 3 years, I came out of it, with a full head of virgin hair. ( I began wearing the weave because my hair seemed to be so damaged, that all it knew how to do was break off. I was also starting to thin on the top. I took it out cause I really wanted to feel my own hair. I felt like I needed to get in touch with the “real” me) I began flat ironing it and although my hair is still healthy, it has experienced breakage. (I’ve tried alot of hair regimens while figuring out what to do with my hair! LOL) My question is, do you find that protective styles are best when caring for natural hair? I am seriously considering braids, but have psorasis and must wash my hair weekly in order not to experience flaking. In the past, I wore micro braids which basically washed down the drain after 2 weeks. Any suggestions on styles or regimen? I absolutely love the styles on your page and think that maybe your salon can work its magic me
Hi Celeste,
Seems you’ve had an adventurous journey with your hair. I think protective styles are best overall if you want to have healthy hair for the long term. Considering the condition of your hair and needing to shampoo weekly here are some suggestions that can hold up to water depending on the texture of your hair, Two Strand Twist or Single braids with your own hair. Of course both of these styles will change with each shampoo but they can still have a hip and funky look or you can style them in a conservative fashion. These same styles done with synthetic hair will hold up for months with a weekly shampoo. The synthetic hair is not affected by water and the styles are singles so you will have a lot of versatility.
Thanks so much for your quick reply!!! I am thinking of the single braids and will make a consultation appointment with your salon. Thanks again for your guidance!!!
